Justice Julia Laffranque elected judge of the European Court of Human Rights

06.10.2010

Yesterday, October 5, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe elected Justice Julia Laffranque judge of the European Court of Human Rights. Laffranque will commence work in Strasbourg on 1 January 2011.

“I am pleased that Estonia was able to come up with three very strong candidates for the position of judge of the European Court of Human Rights. I am doubly delighted that primus inter pares won,” said Chief Justice Märt Rask, when commenting on the competition. “Therefore, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court must soon announce a competition for the vacant justice position in the Supreme Court. I believe there are plenty of strong candidates among Estonian lawyers for the Riigikogu to make a choice,” Rask added.

Julia Laffranque was elected justice on 17 February 2004 and worked in the Administrative Law Chamber of the Supreme Court.
